VRS Direct Force Pro Review
·~4 min·Sim Racing · Gear · Tech
If you’re thinking about upgrading your sim racing setup, you’ve probably come across the VRS Direct Force Pro (DFP) wheelbase. I started sim racing with a Logitech G29, moved to a Fanatec CSW 1.0 paired with CSL Elite load cell pedals, and now I’ve taken the leap into direct drive with the VRS DFP.
Why the VRS Direct Force Pro?
The VRS DFP is a 20Nm direct drive wheelbase that retails for $799 USD. I purchased mine from Advanced Sim Racing in Canada for $1349 CAD, which included the hub adapter. This was a key factor for me, not only did it save me on shipping and import duties, but I was also supporting a local retailer. If you’re outside the U.S., I highly recommend checking local distributors first.
Buy Once, Cry Once
When I was shopping around, I looked at other mid-range direct drive options like the Fanatec CSL DD and the Simagic Alpha Mini, but both offered less torque, 8Nm and 11Nm respectively. The VRS DFP was just $200 more and came in at a full 20Nm. That made the decision easier. It’s one of those “buy once, cry once” situations.
Unboxing and Setup
The wheelbase arrived in three boxes—one for the motor, one for the controller, and one for the hub. It’s quite hefty, so having someone to help mount it to your rig is a good idea (I did it solo and definitely felt it afterward).
Mounting Options
Depending on your sim rig, mounting might differ. I used the front mount from Advanced Sim Racing, but you can also mount from the bottom using VRS’s official mount. I oriented my cables to the left side since my controller sits there.
To get started:
- Attach the hub adapter to the motor.
- Install your wheel or quick release system (I went with the XeroPlay QR, but they’re harder to source in Canada).
- Connect power and encoder cables to the motor → into the controller.
- Plug the USB from the controller to your PC.
- Download and install the VRS software to calibrate and configure.
One note: if you’re playing F1 titles, you’ll need to add a custom XML file to get the wheel recognized. You can grab this from their Discord, under the F1 game channel.
Specs & Performance
- Torque: Up to 20Nm (I run it at ~60% or 12Nm)
- Motor: Mige servo motor
- External controller box
- USB only (no wireless wheel support)

What I Love
- Incredible force feedback detail – You feel everything: surface texture, curbs, bumps, even the shift before losing control.
- Whisper quiet – Unlike my G29 or CSW, this motor is silent, even under load.
- Solid community – Their Discord is active, and support is fast and helpful.
- Easy to use config tool – The VRS® DirectForce® Pro Config Tool is very easy to use and a great step up from their old config tool which looked super outdated.
What I Don’t Love
- Cables from the motor – The two cables sticking out of the Mige motor aren’t as clean as newer wheelbases. And having an external controller box isn’t ideal for minimal setups.
Should You Upgrade?
If you’re looking to improve consistency:
→ Get load cell pedals first.
If you’re chasing immersion and detail:
→ Go direct drive.
Who is the VRS DFP For?
- Anyone wanting more than 10Nm.
- Sim racers with a solid rig that can handle the torque.
- DIY types who want the freedom to choose any wheel or quick release.
💡 Alternatives to consider:
- Moza R9
- Simagic Alpha Mini
- Simucube 2 Sport (more expensive at ~$1199 USD, but has wireless wheel support)
Wheel Compatibility
VRS uses a 70mm bolt pattern and includes a hub adapter. You can mount pretty much any wheel (USB required). I’m currently using:
- Cube Controls Formula Pro (Open Wheel)
- Turn Racing BP2 + R305 (GT3)
- Sparco Round Wheel (Drifting)
They all attach to my XeroPlay QR hub.
Final Thoughts
The VRS Direct Force Pro is an insane value at this price point. It might not have the sleekest software or wireless wheel support, but it absolutely nails the driving feel. I’ve never felt this connected to the virtual tarmac.
If you’re serious about sim racing and want something that can grow with you, this is a rock-solid option.
