This is a quick one about my experience using AppleCare+ Express Replacement instead of booking a Genius Bar appointment to fix my iPhone XS Max. Short version: it was a really positive experience, and I actually had a brand-new phone in my hands, with my old one already on its way back, before I would have even been able to get into the Apple Store.
THE PROBLEM
I'd damaged my XS Max, a back glass and camera issue, and this was during the holiday season, in the second year of my AppleCare+ coverage. Normally I'd just book a Genius Bar appointment and walk in, but this was during the pandemic, and the soonest appointment I could get was about two weeks out. That's a long time to go without your main phone. So I started looking at the other options Apple gives you, and that's where Express Replacement came in.
WHAT EXPRESS REPLACEMENT ACTUALLY IS
Instead of going to a store, Apple ships you a replacement device first, before you send your damaged one back. Here's how it played out for me:
- I started the claim and gave Apple the details of the issue.
- Apple placed a hold on my credit card for the full retail value of the phone. Not a charge, just a security hold in case the old phone never comes back.
- The replacement arrived in a box that doubles as the return packaging, with a prepaid shipping label already included.
- I set up the new phone, dropped the old one into the same box, peeled off the old label, stuck on the return label, and shipped it back.
- Once Apple received my original device, the hold was released.
Because it's an accidental-damage claim under AppleCare+, there's a service fee involved, so it's not "free" in the strictest sense. But it's a fraction of an out-of-warranty repair, and the convenience is the real selling point.
THE GOOD
The speed is the headline. The whole thing was simple and easy, and the timing worked out so well that I had the replacement in hand and my old phone already on its way back before my Genius Bar appointment would have even come up. No driving to the store, no waiting in line, no appointment juggling. The return process was about as painless as it gets: box it up, slap on the label, and ship it back.
THE ONE DOWNSIDE
The only real catch is that credit-card hold for the full value of the phone. If you're tight on available credit, having the full retail price tied up until Apple receives your old device is something to plan for. It's released once they get the original back, but it's worth knowing going in so it doesn't catch you by surprise.
FINAL THOUGHTS
If you've got AppleCare+ and you're choosing between a far-off Genius Bar appointment and Express Replacement, I'd go with Express Replacement, especially if you can't afford to be without your phone for a couple of weeks. As long as you're aware of the credit-card hold, the process is smooth, fast, and low-stress.
